NEW DELHI: The parliamentary standing committee on labour has expressed concern to the labour ministry over tea plantation workers in Assam and West Bengal being denied social security benefits, minimum wages, Provident Fund and Gratuity benefits.
In its report on the labour and employment ministry’s demands for grants for 2021-22, tabled in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the Bhartruhari Mahtab-led House panel said that it was concerned to note that numerous tea gardens faced closure during the current fiscal and even in those that remained functional, many workers were reportedly not provided with social security benefits, minimum wages, Provident Fund benefits and Gratuity benefits.

The Supreme Court will decide whether people in Puerto Rico can receive supplemental Social Security income. Those are federal welfare benefits for older or disabled people.
The justices agreed to hear an appeal first brought by the Trump administration of a ruling last August.
A court ruling in that case said Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, should have the same access as U.S. states to the benefits.
A federal appellate court in April 2020 struck down a federal law denying residents of the island eligibility for the Social Security Supplemental Income program for the severely disabled.
