Margrethe Vestager isn’t wasting any time. Just months after becoming the European Union’s competition chief, the Danish politician moved beyond her predecessors’ cautious policies to confront the monsters of the digital and energy worlds – Google and Gazprom. But her ambitious battles on Eastern and Western fronts may have one clear beneficiary: Europe’s mergers and acquisitions boom.
In a matter of weeks, the “Iron Woman of Denmark” picked up dossiers moldering in the filing cabinets of Joaquin Almunia, the prior competition chief, and turned them into action. “There is a lot to do,” Vestager, 47, said Monday in New York.

The results of the recent municipal elections in Brazil were interpreted in distinct ways by the different actors involved. For some analysts, they clearly signaled a weakness of the 2018 far-right wave and of president Bolsonaro’s ability to successfully endorse candidates.
For others, they indicated a low-risk voting preference: the restricted campaign due to Covid-19 allegedly favored the re-election of mayors and city councilors as well as of candidates affiliated to well-established political parties.
Indeed, the strengthening of several right and center-right parties prompted some to assert the return of the ‘old politics’, or of politics proper, as opposed to the anti-political tendency of the last presidential election.

A former migration minister faces procecution because she ordered child brides to be removed from their older migrant adult husbands during the 2016 Europe Migrant Crisis, an act lawyers have claimed was illegal.
Inger Støjberg used the order in 2016 when she served as immigration and integration minister in the previous Danish government and separated 23 couples where one partner in the adult relationship was legally a child in Danish law.
