The Davyhulme leisure centre is set to reopen on a community-run basis, following the completion of an asset transfer by the local authority.
Trafford Council’s plans for a £35m redevelopment of the Lostock Road site were advanced in early 2018, but were ripped up when the Conservatives lost control of Trafford a few months later. Development plans for Tuern Moss in Stretford also fell victim to an about-turn in policy around leisure facilities.
Consultation was thus reopened on the George H Carnall site, while the Urmston Leisure Centre at Bowfell Road was redeveloped as Move Urmston in a £7m project delivered by ISG.

[Image by Google Street View] A ROW has broken out over the future of a much-loved leisure centre. Ownership of the George Carnall centre in Urmston is being handed over to the community by Community Asset Transfer next month, something agreed by the council in 2020. The centre is being signed over to the George Carnall Community Group which will be responsible for its running and management. As part of the transfer signed off in October 2020, Trafford Council also gave the group more than £100,000 to support immediate necessary repairs and other initial costs. The plan is for the centre’s new owners to apply for council funding grants in future to maintain it.
Plans are underway to “boost the potential” of community life in Warminster. Warminster Town Council have made a series of changes to help revitalise their town centre, as decided upon in a meeting this week. They have requested a Community Asset Transfer (CAT) for Warminster’s Community Hub building, which is located in the Central Car Park. The CAT process allows the transfer of a publicly owned asset, usually land or buildings, to a community organisation at substantially less than the market value. The hub was built back in 1992 by the West Wiltshire District Council, before it was later inherited by Wiltshire Council.
