As anti-racism protesters filled city streets this past summer with calls for a radical rethinking of public safety, a majority of Seattle City Council members responded by committing to cut the city s police budget by 50%. But making good on that promise has been difficult.

–Paso Robles City Council held a virtual meeting Tuesday night.
The meeting started with Fire Chief and Emergency Services Director Jonathon Stornetta giving an update on the latest city, county, and state figures on the coronavirus, as he does each meeting. Colonel Charles Bell provided the council with an update on the US Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett about ways the Army base and the city can work together.
The council discussed an agenda item added Tuesday afternoon. It addressed the council’s decision on the Governor’s Regional Stay-a-Home Order. The council affirmed its direction from Dec. 10, clarifying that while the City of Paso Robles will not be enforcing beyond Purple Tier Guidelines, the State’s Regional Stay at Home Order is still legally in effect, and businesses operating in violation of it are doing so at the risk of enforcement action from the state or county.
IOWA CITY With an eye toward diverting as many crisis calls from officers as possible, forging partnerships in the community and creating new public safety roles, Iowa City Manager Geoff Fruin outlined a preliminary plan Tuesday for restructuring the Iowa City Police Department.
Responding to demands of Black Lives Matter protesters, the Iowa City Council resolved six months ago to among over a dozen other items call for a preliminary plan for restructuring the department with a community policing model in mind.
During the council’s work session Tuesday evening, Fruin walked the council through the highlights of his 246-page plan and 36 recommendations. He said his report and recommendations were the result of a seven-month deep dive into the department’s operations, policies and procedures.
