The pilot program is underway in Lents, and members of the Portland City Council are split on what to do next.
In 2019, the Portland City Council created a new branch of first responders called Portland Street Response. Instead of sending armed police officers to 911 calls involving a houseless person experiencing a mental health crisis in a public space, the city sends out a team of mental health specialists who will try to connect the person in crisis to the services they need.
But Mayor Ted Wheeler, with Commissioners Mingus Mapps and Dan Ryan, want the pilot to play out, and for researchers at Portland State University to study how well or poorly it worked, before expanding the pilot elsewhere.
Youngest ever, first Asian to serve as Oregon City commissioner
Adam Marl, 20, made history this week by becoming the y
oungest and first Asian member ever on the Oregon City Commission. I m looking forward to opening that door and keeping it open for others, he said.
On April 30, Marl took the oath of office for a city commission seat vacated by Rachel Lyles Smith when she stepped up to become mayor. Marl managed the campaign to oust Lyles Smith s mayoral predecessor Dan Holladay. Oregon City commissioners unanimously voted April 29 to appoint Marl to the open commission seat.
For the past three years, Marl has been a paid legislative intern for state Rep. Jack Zika, R-Redmond. Marl will graduate in May from Willamette University with a bachelor s degree after studying politics and communications.

Students won t have classes all this week after unknown actors installed malware
Centennial School District extended its closure for the remainder of the week after it announced Monday that the district computer systems were breached.
The East County district initially said it would be closed Tuesday, April 27 and Wednesday, April 28, but Tuesday night extended the closure through Friday, April 30. Due to the unauthorized intrusion into the Centennial School District s computer system, schools will remain closed for students in all programs for the remainder of the week, the district said Tuesday night.
Earlier Tuesday evening the school board gathered in an online emergency meeting that lasted only a few minutes. It voted to authorize the funds to allow the district to hire an outside firm to untangle the computer mess.
