Only around 20 percent of the original quota of displaced persons permitted to settle in Estonia in the wake of the European migrant crisis are still resident in Estonia, while the full limit was not reached at any time, ETV investigative show Pealtnägija reported Wednesday.
The show also took a look at why this might have been the case, and spoke to political leaders involved in the debate at the time, as well as a young person who fled the Syrian civil war with her family and who has successfully integrated into Estonian life.
Authorities are investigating allegations that children at a secure care home in Rakvere have been subject to long-running abuse at the hands of the home s staff. The home is aimed at hosting children who have displayed behavioral issues but have also been identified as vulnerable.
The prosecutor s office has initiated proceedings in the case as per standard procedure. The home is run by a private firm, overseen by the relevant authority, the Social Insurance Board (Sotsiaalkindlustusamet).
Elle Karm, prosecutor at the Viru District Prosecutor s Office, said: On the basis of the report of criminal offense received from the Social Insurance Board, we have as of today initiated criminal proceedings to verify suspicions of crime in connection with the physical and mental abuse of children at a child care institution, and are currently actively collecting information to find out all the circumstances.
The average monthly salary of a civil servant in Estonia rose by 3.8 percent last year to €1,948 while the average salary rose by 2.9 percent. Secretary of State Taimar Peterkop had the highest salary at over €80,000.
A police investigation has been opened into allegations of sexual abuse by a football coach at top-flight team Nõmme Kalju FC. Two more victims have reportedly since come forward, following the allegations first made public late last week, by former women s player Mia Belle Trisna, against Nõmme Kalju coach Fredo Getúlio Aurelio.
The Estonian Football League (EJL) referred the matter to the prosecutor s office and the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) Monday, ERR s sports portal reports. The league had initially planned ot conduct its own investigation, but since the allegations concern a potential crime, opted to hand it over.
