US social media giant Facebook has not only allowed state-run outlets like China Daily and CGTN to publish posts that dismiss these concerns as Western “disinformation” – it has accepted advertising payments to help promote this content to millions of people.
Presented with the findings of Press Gazette’s investigation, Imran Ahmed – chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate – said it was “beyond disgusting that Facebook is taking money to promote Chinese state propaganda denying the reality that their state is engaged in crimes against humanity against Uyghur Muslims”.
In one case, by paying Facebook less than $400, China Daily was able to target more than one million users with a video that rubbishes independent press reports from Xinjiang.

President Joe Biden s personal Twitter profile has gained more than 15 million followers in the months since the November 3 election.
A snapshot of Biden s social media account taken the day of the election by the Internet Archive s Wayback Machine shows he had 11.9 million followers. That number has now grown to 27.2 million as of Wednesday a rise of roughly 15.3 million followers.
Former President Donald Trump s once-thriving Twitter account remains silenced after it was suspended on January 8 due to the risk of it inciting further violence in the wake of the Capitol Building riot three days prior. It had 88.7 million followers.

The Twitter accounts of Donald Trump s immediate family have largely grown in popularity in the weeks since the end of his presidency.
While Trump himself remains banned from the social network, accounts used by his son Donald Jr., daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, and wife Melania were still attracting new followers as of Monday, with only Eric Trump showing consistent decline.
Trump s term in the White House came to a close on January 20 as President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn into office.
