1. The Shipyard. BAE Systems owns the shipyard in Barrow. It operates one of the few shipyards in the world capable of designing and building nuclear submarines, which has constructed all but three of the Royal Navy’s nuclear-powered submarines. It’s got a long history dating back to 1986 and employs approximately 9000 people. 2. Dave Myers One half of the Hairy Bikers, Dave Myers was born and bred in Barrow before he flew the nest to study fine arts in London and later in life becoming a popular television chef and presenter. He then went on to perform alongside his partnering chef the “Big Night Out” show in theatres throughout the UK.
