Elon Musk set off market activity again after an early morning tweet.
Musk’s tweets about a purchase made on Etsy for his dog led to an 18% jump in its shares, which climbed to $227.40 shortly after 9am US eastern time today. There was also an immediate spike in trading volume for the e-commerce platform, which sells crafts, home-goods, and vintage items.
Musk has moved stocks with his tweets before, but last time it was about the wrong company. Two weeks ago, on Jan. 7, the Tesla CEO tweeted “Use Signal,” which was likely about the encrypted messaging service and app developed by the non-profit Signal Foundation, and isn’t publicly traded. Investors and fans of the South African billionaire quickly bought shares of Signal Advance instead, a technology component manufacturing company headquartered in Rosharon, Texas. Signal Advance shares shot up 6350% over three trading sessions.

Messaging app s following doubles on website.
Twitter followers of instant messaging app Signal have nearly doubled in the past two weeks amid a growing public backlash against rival WhatsApp.
Signal’s following on the microblogging platform has surged to over 465,000 as of January 24 from over 240,000 on January 10, according to estimates shared by influencer data analytics firm Qoruz, as it has made privacy the core of its communication strategy.
In an email response, Signal s head of growth & communications, Jun Harada, attributed the increase to greater advocacy for privacy online and a collective realisation around the world that Facebook really is an app for your data.
Earlier this month, WhatsApp issued a new privacy policy along with an ultimatum: accept these new terms, or delete WhatsApp from your smartphone. But the new privacy policy wasn’t particularly clear, and it was widely misinterpreted to mean WhatsApp would be sharing more sensitive personal data with its parent company Facebook. Unsurprisingly, it prompted a fierce backlash, with many users threatening to stop using the service. WhatsApp soon.

Telegram Experiences Massive Growth in January: 90 Million New Users
Messaging app Telegram has announced that it gained 90 million new users in January alone.
“In January 2021, more than 90 million new users from around the world joined Telegram,” reads the encrypted messaging app’s message. “Thank you! These milestones were made possible by users like you who invite their friends to Telegram.”
The Washington, D.C.-based Coalition for a Safer Web recently started a lawsuit against Apple for not taking action to remove the messaging app Telegram, alleging that the platform allowed violent and radical discussions related to the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S Capitol.
