City of Detroit to launch door-knocking campaign to encourage walk-in COVID-19 vaccinations

DETROIT (WXYZ) â The City of Detroit will begin knocking on doors to encourage residents to get vaccinated at area walk-in locations.
The campaign will begin on Monday, May 3. Door-knocking will take place in neighborhoods around six vaccination sites.
âWe are knocking on doors because we want to get the word about our walk-in locations and make it easy for everyone to take advantage of these life-saving vaccines,â said Denise Fair, Chief Public Health Officer.

Wayne County Public Health Division is offering walk-up vaccines from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at four locations:
Wayne County Community College District s Downriver Campus, 21000 Northline Road, Taylor
Schoolcraft College s VisTaTech Center, 18600 Haggerty Road, Livonia
Wayne County Community College District s Ted Scott Campus, 9555 Haggerty Road, Belleville
Flat Rock Community Center, 1 Maguire St., Flat Rock
Meijer said pharmacies at each of its stores will have at least 100 doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for walk-ups on a first-come, first-serve basis. Appointments also can be made by texting the word COVID to 75049, by going online to clinic.meijer.com or calling the local pharmacy.
Michigan adds 3,623 cases, 109 deaths from COVID-19
Michigan on Thursday added 3,623 new cases and 109 deaths from the coronavirus.
The latest figures bring the state s total number of cases to 837,514 and deaths to 17,576 since the virus was first detected in March 2020, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. Of the Thursday deaths, 78 were identified during a delayed records review.
The state continues to lead the nation in new cases per capita for four straight weeks despite a third of its residents being fully vaccinated.
Last week Michigan added 34,013 new cases and 449 deaths, ending a run of eight consecutive weeks of rising infections. During the previous week of April 11-17, the state added 47,284 cases and 342 deaths.

Washington U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence has organized a mass COVID-19 vaccination week targeting the African American community that she modeled on Election Day voting drives.
The Southfield Democrat s effort is part of a broader Congressional Black Caucus initiative that aims to raise awareness and boost access, offering free vaccinations with walk-up shots in various neighborhoods in her district, which includes Detroit and parts of Wayne and Oakland counties.
The drive runs Saturday through May 8, which is Mother s Day weekend.
