hen the call came to fight the Islamic State, the lines of volunteers in Nasiriyah, Iraq, stretched for blocks. Friends pooled money to pay for the ride to militia recruitment offices. Young men were already scrambling on to buses bound for the front lines.
As the Iraqi army melted away, it fell often to the mostly Shiite Muslim militias to go back and rout the Sunni extremists of the Islamic State. For many in the city, it felt like a battle for Iraq’s soul.

Baghdad, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) Iraq s Popular Mobilization Units (al-Hashd al-Shaabi, in Arabic) launched a broad operation against strongholds of the Islamic State terrorist group, according to Al Forat news.
Detachments of the force, which acts under the guidance of the Armed Forces, began to deploy around the city of Samarra, 125 kilometers north of the capital.
Reports show that the goal is to identify and eliminate hidden cells of the extremist group that resort to sporadic attacks on isolated towns.
Iraqi Intelligence reported the arrest of a leader of Daesh (an acronym in Arabic for Islamic State) in Mosul, the capital of the province of Nineveh.
