New Zealand nurses vote on third sellout offer About 30,000 nurses, healthcare assistants and hospital-based midwives are currently voting on a third pay offer from New Zealand’s District Health Boards (DHBs). Voting ends tomorrow. Members of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) held an eight-hour nationwide strike on June 9 after rejecting two previous offers that would have lifted wages by just 1.38 percent, less than half the current rate of inflation. The NZNO provoked widespread anger among nurses when it cancelled a strike scheduled for July 29 before presenting the new proposed multi-employer collective agreement (MECA) for a vote. The offer does not address low wages or the increasingly desperate staffing crisis in public hospitals caused by decades of underfunding.

New Zealand: Vote no to sellout of Wellington bus drivers! Form rank-and-file committees! The Socialist Equality Group calls for Wellington bus drivers to decisively reject the new draft collective employment agreement (CEA), hatched by NZ Bus and the Tramways Union. This is the fourth deal presented to bus drivers since April. Most recently, on June 23, drivers rejected a sellout agreement backed by the union, which would have reduced overtime and weekend penalty rates, scrapped taxi allowances and lengthened the standard broken shift working day from 11 to 12 hours. Mass anti-Bolsonaro protests as Brazil faces 550,000 COVID deaths Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Brazil last Saturday in a new round of protests against fascistic President Jair Bolsonaro’s murderous handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The protests took place in hundreds of cities in all 26 Brazilian states and also abroad. In the largest of the demonstrations, 70,000 people gathered on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo, according to organizers. It was the fourth day of mass demonstrations against Bolsonaro since May 29, when street protests began to take place after a deadly second wave of the pandemic in March and April, and amid the Senate Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PCI) investigation of the federal government’s conduct in combating the pandemic.
