With only 50 percent of its usual offerings, the six-week Tanglewood Music Festival will kick off July 10 with an all-Beethoven program including the Fifth Symphony, a nod to the Festival’s original opening concert in 1937, since the event marks a reopening after a year of silence in the Berkshires (and 16 months without live performances by the full BSO). The grounds will open, free to the public, on June 15.
Also on opening concert, with Music Director Andris Nelsons on the podium, is the Fifth Piano Concerto with Festival favorite Emanuel Ax and the Overture to
The Creatures of Prometheus.
The renowned Berkshires venue in Lenox and Stockbridge will offer a shortened, six-week program from July 9 to August 16 that features performances by the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Tanglewood Music Center orchestras, guest artists, and special chamber music and large ensemble groups. Performances will be about 80 minutes long with no intermission and take place in the open-air Koussevitzky Music Shed, which received updates to its indoor air ventilation and filtration systems.
“This summer is destined to be incredibly special, as the BSO and I return to our beloved Tanglewood and concerts for live audiences,” said Andris Nelsons, the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra who will lead eight orchestra programs this summer, in a statement. “Among the many highlights planned, we will pay tribute to Beethoven and spotlight 18 important composers of our time, representing a beautiful spectrum of styles and diverse backgrounds.”
LENOX â The lineup for the Boston Symphony Orchestraâs six-week season at Tanglewood is packed with audience-favorite music, marquee artists and an extensive schedule of events â all in the open-air Shed and on the expansive Lawn, with audience capacity limits and health protocols based on state and federal guidance.
Details for the July 9-Aug. 16 festival, unveiled Thursday, follow last monthâs announcement of how the BSOâs summer home will navigate restrictions by maintaining separation between audience members and by closing indoor spaces, including Ozawa Hall and the Linde Center for Music and Learning.
BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons will conduct eight orchestral performances during the first three weekends of the season.
