OPINION: Treaty 3 leaders must reject Bill C-15

Article content Canada wants to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, under Bill C-15. Canada’s biggest problem is that Indigenous people are not in the room making that decision. Ironically, the core concept of UNDRIP is the concept of free, prior, and informed consent. It is concerning that the action plan is being developed behind closed doors with “key” Indigenous groups. Grand Council Treaty #3 leadership must stand in opposition to relationship restructuring because our Anishinaabe governance structures will be further undermined in this process. I must note that my perspective of Canadian government relations flows from traditional knowledge as passed to me by my parents, grandparents and other elders in my life. Kenora Moving Forward rededicates, pledges unending service to community

The organization’s announcement comes off the heels of a successful winter season, during which volunteers operated several warming spaces across the city aimed at keeping those experiencing homelessness safe, out of the cold and comfortable with warm food. While the spaces were run out of the First Presbyterian and First Baptist Churches – aided by several other local churches and stakeholders – certain contracts have expired and the organization is now engaging its patrons outdoors until a new indoor location can be found.

Article continues below advertisement ↴ Treaty Three Police service is introducing a new vehicle decal in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.  The idea for the decal came from uniformed members of Treaty Three Police Service who wanted to start further discussions about MMIWG. The project was lead by T3PS Spirit of Hope Coordinator.  “The art piece was created in collaboration with the Grand Council Treaty #3 Women’s council, Elder Howard Copenace and MMIWG family member and advocate, Sharon Johnson. We’ve had several virtual meetings during the past few months. The designer for the graphic is a Couchiching band member, Fallon Andy who assisted us with bringing together the group’s final ideas. The group was very cooperative and honoured to assist with creating such a decal for T3PS,” says Smith.
