The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other mainstream parties of Sindh expressed dismay on Monday over the Council of Common Interests’ decision to approve the controversial 2017 census results.
After three years of controversy and difference of opinions, the matter was dragged before the CCI - a constitutional forum that resolves issues between federation and provinces - last week. The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, failed to reach a consensus, however.

Welcoming the Council of Common Interestâs (CCI) recent decision to hold a national census by the end of 2021, leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Monday said the next headcount would be conducted ahead of time and in accordance with modern requirements. Addressing a press conference at the partyâs headquarters in Bahadurabad, MQM-P leader and Senator Faisal Subzwari said his party was the first to raise its concerns over the census.
âIn fact, even before the census, the MQM-P had expressed reservations and approached the Supreme Court,â he said. He added that the MQM-P did not accept the results of the flawed census of 2017. âOur demand was to declare it flawed and announce a new census and therefore we welcome the announcement of a new census.â
Sindh government dissented with the majority decision, says Asad Umar
The Council of Common Interest (CCI) has approved the results of controversial census held in 2017 and decided to hold a new nosecount by the end of 2021, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar announced on Monday.
The CCI – a constitutional forum to discuss and decide matters between the federation and provinces – held its meeting on Monday with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair. It was attended by all the four chief ministers and relevant federal ministers.
Addressing the press conference following the meeting, Umar said the census results have been approved with the consent of majority members except the Sindh government.
