(CNN) No parades, limited gatherings and shuttered bars. A normally raucous Bourbon Street almost devoid of people. No sign of crowds who traveled far and wide from other places. And absolutely frigid weather on top of it all.
It doesn t sound like much of a Mardi Gras Day, does it? Beyond the imagination of anyone just a year ago, that s the reality on the ground in New Orleans in 2021.
City officials definitely did not want the holiday turning into a Covid-19 superspreader event. Please, I m begging you, please do not attempt any large gatherings, New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said at a news conference last week.

This year, the familiar phrase down south will have to change from Laissez le bon temps rouler to Que les bons moments roulent malgré la pandémie.
Party packages feed two people. They cost $150 for three quarts of anything on the menu, plus a mini King Cake and 32 ounces of the restaurant s signature Hurricane drink. Without the drinks, the meal runs $125.
You can still order food on Tuesday morning.

Over the holidays, you may have caught my Cinnamon Roll recipe. Now that it s Mardi Gras, we ll take that same recipe, tweak it a bit, and turn it into a King Cake!
Ingredients:
1 Tbsp Yeast
1 Cup Milk (Warmed to 115 Degrees)
Filling:
1/2 Cup Whipping Cream (Poured When Rolls Go In The Oven)
Frosting:
1/3 Cup Butter (Softened)
1 1/2 Cups Powdered Sugar
1 Tbsp Vanilla
Warm your milk to 115 degrees. Pour the yeast over the top, and add a pinch of your sugar. Let that sit for a few minutes so it starts bubbling.

At one end of Dauphin Street on this extremely wet Thursday night, convicts and referees mill around in Moe’s Original Bar B Que. At the other, a guy named Fat Heavy sits on a corner in a sequined costume, waving at cars.
There isn’t much to see on the nine-block walk from Washington Avenue to Joachim Street. Some of the restaurants and bars in between have a few customers. Others are empty, maître d’s and bartenders as poised and motionless as figures in paintings. It’s hard to make the walk without thinking about how different things should be, on the Thursday before Fat Tuesday, with people crowding these sidewalks, flocking in and out of these businesses before and
