Grant Will Strengthen Equitable Access to Six Growth Industries (Image Credit (www.mcca.org))
LANSING (February 2, 2021) The Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) today announced that it has received an $800,000 grant to improve student access to programs in growth areas that lead to in-demand jobs.
The grant, awarded by Madison, Wisconsin-based Ascendium Education Group, will assist Michigan s community colleges in strengthening access to workforce development programs in six growth industries. These industries include health professions, applied business, protective services, engineering technologies, computer and information sciences and applied technology/skilled trades. This grant gives us the opportunity to deliver for students, helping them gain skills that will lead to successful careers, said Mike Hansen, president of the MCCA. Community colleges are preparing to welcome new students to campus right now through Futures for Frontliners and Michigan

RICHMOND, VA Fifty years can be a long time, especially when it means reconnecting with someone from your distant past. But for Betty Conner and Peter Nickless, all it took was five decades and a global pandemic to bring to lives back together.
Conner, a 71-year-old retiree and Nickless, a carefree sailor, had attended Richmond s Huguenot High School together in the 1960s. In their high school days, Nickless was the co-captain of the football team and where Conner s shy personality kept her from becoming overly involved in school activities.

FAIRFIELD, CT Human rights activist and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Nadia Murad will be the keynote speaker at Fairfield University s Annual Student Forum on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 8 p.m. This panel discussion, part of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts Open VISIONS Forum (OVF), will be moderated by College of Arts and Sciences Professor Philip Eliasoph, founding director of OVF.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY Controversy has erupted over a second large electronic billboard being erected by the Shinnecock Nation on the north side of Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays.
On January 28, the New York State Department of Transportation delivered a stop-work order to members of the Shinnecock Nation working on the second electronic billboard on tribal-owned land near the westbound lane of New York State Route 27, directly across the highway from a 61-foot sign erected by the Shinnecock Nation in 2019.
