EUGENE, Ore. - Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg visited Western Oregon on Wednesday to promote President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework.
He started in Corvallis where he visited the area of Highway 99, the scene of several traffic fatalities over the years. Buttigieg then visited Lane Transit District to see their new fleet of electric buses.
Congressman Peter DeFazio joined the tour to highlight the benefits that infrastructure investments provide to the economy, job creation, transportation safety and the fight against climate change.
Big political names met in a strip mall parking lot along one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in Oregon on Wednesday. The purpose of the session was to talk about a new traffic safety initiative thatâs part of the infrastructure package currently working its way through the Senate, as well as a new bill authored by Rep. Peter DeFazio.
The meeting included U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, administrators with the Oregon Department of Transportation, Corvallis Mayor Biff Traber and DeFazio, the Chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. DeFazio s U.S House District 4 includes the mid-valley.

Buttigieg and DeFazio were joined by Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis, Springfield Mayor Sean VanGordon and LTD General Manager Aurora Jackson when touring the electric buses that are part of LTD s long-term sustainability efforts. Their trip to Eugene was part of a two-stop tour of Oregon promoting the INVEST in America Act transit infrastructure bill.
Their first stop Wednesday was a tour and briefing from local leaders along a Highway 99 corridor in Corvallis where several pedestrians and cyclists have been killed.
