Kuala Lumpur: Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) defended the Covid-19 standard operation procedures SOPs announced for the Chinese New Year celebrations against public criticism, saying the protocols were only passed after engaging dozens of stakeholder groups. The senior and defence minister said he is “baffled” by the public backlash that followed his announcement of the SOPs , when they had been prepared and endorsed by associations and bodies that represent the ethnic Chinese community.  Ismail said the National Security Council adopts recommendations made by the National Unity Ministry (KPN) when preparing the SOPs for religious or cultural celebrations. ADVERTISEMENT Ismail noted the same procedure had been adopted for this year’s Lunar Year celebration anti-Covid 19 protocols.

Fasting and Abstinence as usual for Ash Wednesday during Lunar Year celebration

KOTA KINABALU: This year Ash Wednesday falls on Feb 17 in the midst of the Lunar Year celebration, which kicks in on Feb 12. In a January circular released to the clergy and the religious, Archbishop John Wong, has asked all faithful in the Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese to observe the regular fast and abstinence from meat for Ash Wednesday. However, dispensation from fast and abstinence from meat is granted to all faithful celebrating the Chinese New Year on three consecutive Fridays: 12, 19 and 26 February. The decision was made as part of the Liturgical Matters raised for this region at the Catholic Bishops Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei online meeting on 4-8 January 2021.
