Two-time United States champion Wesley So succumbed to Armenia-born Levon Aronian in the quarterfinals to crash out in the Newa in Chess Classic of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Thursday, April 29.
So, 27, failed to come through after drawing the first two games and losing the third that sealed Aronian the match victory.
Aronian won the first of their two-set quarters duel Wednesday, 3-1, that included a match where So committed a costly mouse slip.
That fateful error proved to be the turning point of the showdown as So was never really the same from there.
With the win, Aronian moved on to a collision course in Friday’s semifinal with world classical champion Magnus Carlson, who turned back an upset-conscious Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan.

On to the semifinals
On the second day of play in the quarterfinals of the New in Chess Classic, the three players who had taken the lead on the first day maintained their advantage.
In the match between Wesley So and Levon Aronian, the Armenian, who recently switched to the US Federation, had won the first set clearly 3-1. The first two games of the second set ended drawn, which meant Wesley So needed a win in the third game. But it was Aronian who scored a full point, ending the second set prematurely, as So could at most equalize in this set, but no longer the overall score.

New in Chess Classic, Day 4 - Quarterfinal
16 players have started in the New in Chess Classic Online tournament, and the best eight of the preliminaries round now face each other in knockout matches. They play two four-game matches over two days, and if the score after these two matches is 2:2, two blitz games and, if necessary, an Armageddon game will force a decision.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen dominated the preliminaries: he didn t lose a single game and finished clear first with a score of 10.5/15. But the quarterfinal against Teimour Radjabov went less smoothly. Carlsen remained undefeated, but was unable to put Radjabov, who played in his usual solid and confident style, under any serious pressure in the four games of the first match and had to settle for four draws in a row.
