An exciting final day of action
The 2021 Polish Championships were played in two different formats. The open section was a 16-player knockout event while the women’s section was a 10-player single round robin. Except for Jan-Krzysztof Duda, every player from the national top 10 participated.

In the end, it was rating favourite Radoslaw Wojtaszek who won the open tournament, defeating Wojciech Moranda in the final match. This was Wojtaszek’s fourth victory in the national championship. The experienced grandmaster had won the event for the first time in 2005, the same year he was awarded the GM title, at 18. Poland’s number 2 also prevailed in 2014 and 2016.

No draws for the champion
In August 2020, Iceland was one of the first countries to organize its national championship as an over-the-board tournament. The 108th edition of the championship was held about nine months later in Kópavogur, Iceland’s second-largest municipality by population. The city is located south of Reykjavík and is part of the Capital Region.
Fischer liked to play aggressive but basically sound lines against the Sicilian and many of his variations are still very much alive and a good choice for players of all levels.

Dubai: If you are a fan of the Netflix chess drama The Queen’s Gambit, you are in for a treat this year. Expo 2020 Dubai, which kicks off in October, is gearing up to host the World Chess Championship, a global competition organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) every two years.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic the finale was postponed to 2021, and will now kick off on November 24 and conclude on December 16.
