Along with the weather, criminal activity appears to be heating up in Grant County.
“April and the first week of May have brought us a significant increase in serious incidents and/or criminal cases,” Sheriff Frank Gomez told Grant County commissioners at their regular meeting Thursday. He noted that “a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history” who had recently been released from prison was apprehended this week in connection with a May 1 shootout that occurred “at a large family gathering” in Santa Clara.
Gomez told the Daily Press that the Silver City Police Department arrested 27-year-old Joseph Chavez pursuant to an arrest warrant during a traffic stop in the Brewer Hill neighborhood Wednesday. According to court documents, in addition to three criminal charges stemming from the Santa Clara shootout, Chavez picked up seven more charges during the traffic stop, during which police say they found nearly 11 grams of methamphetamine in the car Chavez was operatin

It’s National Police Week, and Laredo College is honoring law enforcement and, most importantly, campus police officers at both campuses with various tokens of appreciation throughout the week.
“Laredo College Campus Police continuously maintain order and are committed to safeguarding employees and students all year round,” LC President Dr. Ricardo J. Solis said. “They also take a proactive role in creating a positive learning environment. They engage daily with students, faculty, staff and community members to help promote safety at our institution.”
Attorney General Knudsen on National Police Week May 9-15
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen appeared on the KGVO Montana Morning news show on Friday as he was driving into Missoula, and asked Montanans to commemorate National Police Week. May 9-15.
“Well, Peter, here s what we ve got going on in the state of Montana,” said Knudsen. “We know violent crime is increasing. We know methamphetamine from the southern border is driving this up, and that s why it is a very dangerous time to be a law enforcement officer in Montana. We don t have the statewide numbers, but what we do know is in our most populous city of Billings, incidents of assault on police officers were up 50% last year.”
