This time, itâs the weather.
âThe rain is having a tremendous impact on our outdoor festival,â said Nicole Tomasofky, director of marketing and communications at Jacobâs Pillow Dance Festival. Persistent rainfall forced the Pillow to cancel 10 out of its 20 performances â with refunds to patrons â within the first two weeks of its outdoor-only summer season.
Other outdoor work is a struggle.
âWhen itâs wet, we canât,â said Tom Zanconato, owner of Zanconato Paving & Sealcoating in Pittsfield.
âYou should not sealcoat or crack seal when itâs raining.â
But, the soggy weather can be a boon for some.

Local author William Hill will lead two historical hikes on local trails Saturday and Sunday. He will be the guide for the Lampson Falls hike on Saturday, May 15 and Catamount Mountain on Sunday.Interested hikers can meet him at 10 a.m. at the hike’s trailhead.
The Massena Public Library and the Nicandri Nature Center are partnering to provide opportunities for families and individuals to promote outdoor hiking activities this spring, including hikes.
William C. Hill is author of “Hiking: The Trail to Yesterday, a Collection of Northern New York Hikes and their Histories.” The book is a collection of hiking trails close to home. Contact the library or nature center for a copy of the book.
