Amaraweera: SL won t succumb to Indian pressure – The Island

By Ifham Nizam India had no authority to dictate terms to a sovereign nation like Sri Lanka, said Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday. Speaking to journalists, Amaraweera expressed concern regarding a statement made by an Indian Minister that a government would be formed in Sri Lanka under the leadership of the Bharathiya Janatha Party (BJP). “Sri Lanka is a free and independent country. Therefore, no one can interfere when it comes to our country’s matters,” he stressed. Amaraweera said he did not know whether the news item was true or false, but that any country that did not wish external interventions would oppose it as the present government.

Police seize heroin, ICE from guesthouse: mastermind operates from prison cell

By Norman Palhawadana Acting on a tip-off, the police Organised Crime Unit yesterday (16) raided a guesthouse at the Gam Sabha junction, Nugegoda and seized a consignment of ICE and heroin weighing five kilos each.  The police arrested the manager of the guesthouse. Under interrogation, the suspect revealed that the parcels containing drugs had been handed over to him by an unknown party. However, the police said they were looking for two persons who managed the guesthouse as a partnership. A senior officer said the consignment of drugs had a street value of Rs.100 mn. The manager of the restaurant is a resident of Kandy and had started working there only a few months back.
