Mr Michael Riches to be nominated as Independent Commissioner Against Corruption

NT Government The Northern Territory Government today announced the nomination of Mr Michael Riches for appointment as the new Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (ICAC), following the upcoming retirement of the current ICAC, Mr Kenneth Fleming QC in July 2021. Chief Minister Michael Gunner said in accordance with the Protocol for the Appointment of Statutory Officers under the Northern Territory Integrity Framework, an Advisory Panel was convened to undertake the selection process and to make an independent recommendation for this important appointment. The Advisory Panel comprised the Honourable Trevor Riley QC as former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory (as the Advisory Panel Chair), the Solicitor-General of the Northern Territory, Mr Nikolai Christup SC, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet, Ms Jodie Ryan.

In 2016, when she joined the teaching profession, she was inspired by her students to continue her studies to fulfil that dream. Motivated by them, Ms Lal, 34, completed her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and Bachelors in Law at the University of Fiji and on April 9 she was admitted to the Bar to serve the people of Fiji. Originally from Korowiri, Labasa, she now lives at Tacirua Heights, Suva, with her family. Ms Lal said her journey began in 2008 when she joined the civil service.

Picture: FT FILE The University of Fiji’s Justice Devendra Pathik School of Law has embarked on a new initiative to allow its law students to complete their professional placement module by virtual means with designated law firms and organisations in the country. According to a statement issued by the university, the School of Law’s Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) program is normally undertaken over a period of six months post LLB degree with the final month being a ‘Placement Module’ where students are placed in law firms and organisations.
