Cone Boulevard at Lawndale Drive closes to traffic after gas leak Saturday afternoon

GREENSBORO, N.C. Greensboro city officials said Cone Boulevard at Lawndale Drive has been closed to traffic after a gas leak Saturday afternoon.
Officials said firefighters originally estimated at least one lane of Cone Boulevard would reopen to traffic between 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
However, officials confirmed roads wouldn t be back open until late Saturday night or possibly early Sunday morning as of 7:15 p.m. Saturday evening.
The opening comes almost one year to the day after the most recent section of the thoroughfare opened, a stretch between Battleground Avenue and Lawndale.
Two more miles of the Urban Loop opened to traffic in northern Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon. Even after some employees confronted management after finding out about the latest case on Dec. 16, the restaurant wasn t shut down, said Edy Hayden, a server at the Spring Garden location.

Now with the opening of the new, 2-mile stretch between Lawndale Drive and North Elm Street, only one more section of the highway is needed to complete a 49-mile loop around Greensboro!
NCDOT says the 4-mile section between North Elm Street and U.S. 29 is expected to open by early 2023, weather permitting.
“All of us at NCDOT are proud to see this come to fruition,” said North Carolina Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette. “This project will connect Greensboro and its northern neighbors to the rest of our state like never before.”
