Garland Frankie Yarbrough, Jr. departed this world on April 11, 2021, while surrounded by his wife of 44 years, Jennifer Yarbrough, and his sons, Eric (Jennifer Free, Robert and Rachel), Brian (Shellie Thompson), and Robert (Jennifer Mikoll, Charlotte and Violet).
The son of Garland Frankie Yarbrough Sr. and Vivian Delores Yarbrough, Garland was born on July 29, 1954 in Portsmouth, Va.
Garland was a caring man who was well respected and mutually loved by all who knew him. Called simply “G” by family and friends, he was known for his quick witted commentary and for providing “life lessons” to his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews - or to anyone else who would listen! He placed others first in all he did, and he maintained meaningful relationships with extended family and friends that spanned many years.
Phillips, Kurt Steven
Kurt Steven Phillips was born in Los Angeles, Ca. on June 25,1954.
He was a lifelong member of the Crystal Cathedral. He served our country in the US Coast Guard during the Vietnam war. After the Coast Guard, he became an iron worker which took him all over the U.S. and Europe. After Kurt’s injury, he won several medals on the weight lifting and archery teams at the International Paralyzed Veterans Olympics. He would become an instructor for the Iron Workers Apprentice Program, Local 433 in Los Angeles, Ca. He made Daytona Beach his home in 1990. He embraced the Florida lifestyle. He loved to fish, cook, tell stories and laugh, all of which suited him well. His personality entered the room before his wheelchair did. He never met a stranger, and always had time for a joke, no matter how corny. Kurt attended the Daytona Drive-In Christian Church, where he fueled his deep faith In God. Mildred Ruth Romine Smith of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at the age of 91.
She was the daughter of the late John Carlen and Nora Bell Hooks Mansel originally of Bethpage, Tn. With her late husband, they operated Ralph’s Coiffures for over 40 years in the Signal Mountain community. There she served as children’s Sunday School teacher and faithful member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church.
Known to all as “Ms Ruth,” she loved people. Ruth was always the consummate host whether at the shop or at her home. Everyone she met received her special, warm lilted “well hello there” that made you feel so special. If ever the label humble servant was fitting a persona, it was Ruth.
