I guess it was inevitable that one of my trivia questions would stir up a controversy. But Iâll get to that a little later in the column.
Averell Harriman, a railroad magnate in the 1930s, saw the growing popularity of destination ski resorts in Europe and felt it was time for the United States to have one as well. Skiing was becoming more popular in the U.S., but skiing areas tended to be in rural towns with few luxury options.
Harriman wanted to build a ski resort for the rich and famous that would be easily accessible via his railroad. After an exhaustive search, he settled on Sun Valley, Idaho. By the way, one of the sites that didnât make the grade was Alta, Utah.
Bethel Invites Community To Skate For A Cause On Wednesday Monday, January 11, 2021
Charity Skate Night for Bethel at Ice on the Landing, which is located behind the Chattanooga Choo Choo on Market Street, will be Wednesday from 5-9 p.m.
Ice on the Landing will donate 20 percent of the proceeds from the evening to Bethel, which is a Godsend in this difficult year, according to Bethel President and CEO Rosalind Connor.
“Due to the pandemic, so many children are dealing with trauma and crisis right now,” Ms. Connor said. “And many are experiencing learning loss as they fall behind in their education. As you can imagine, the need for the help Bethel can provide has never been greater.”
The Bethlehem Center Skates Into The New Year With A Fundraiser Monday, December 28, 2020
Since its opening in mid November, Ice on the Landing has designated Wednesdays as Charity Night. On Wednesday, Jan. 6 from 4-9 p.m., the community will have an opportunity to support The Bethlehem Center while celebrating the New Year. A percentage of the ice rink’s sales on Jan. 6 will directly benefit from The Bethlehem Center’s Virtual Learning Centers. The Bethlehem Center partnered with Hamilton County Schools in September to offer Virtual Learning Centers for students who decided to enroll in the Hamilton County Schools’ At Home Learning. To date, The Bethlehem Center operates three learning centers whereby 60 students gather weekly for remote learning.

âPardon me boys is this the Chattanooga Choo Choo..â
Nine days before Christmas and Iâm finishing up the last of the greeting cards that will be mailed tomorrow and hopefully arrive into the homes of their recipients before the 25th. I could blame my delay in getting them mailed out on the storm blowing outside the kitchen window, but then again, it was not snowing yesterday.
Ron will come in from clearing the walks and driveway and may question Barry Manilow, âSinginâ With the Big Bands,â blasting out of the kitchen speakers. This is Christmas music? Oh, most definitely not.
