Jail need is apparent | News, Sports, Jobs - The Times Leader

Dec 16, 2020 We do not recall ever having heard of a place where the local jail is as inadequate as Harrison County’s. The facility, located in the county seat of Cadiz, can hold just eight prisoners. Even during relatively normal times, that is insufficient for a county with slightly more than 15,000 residents. During the past few years, with a drug abuse epidemic in progress, the jail has been woefully inadequate. As a result, county commissioners have been forced to pay other counties in the Buckeye State to house Harrison County’s prisoners. The cost of that practice last year alone was about $170,000.

Funding for a new Harrison County Jail facility discussed | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff writer CADIZ In order to obtain potential U.S. Department of Agriculture funding for a new Harrison County Jail facility, an environmental study must be conducted on the proposed location. The estimated $15 million project is slowly moving forward one step at a time. Harrison County Commissioners Paul Coffland, Don Bethel and Dale Norris signed an agreement Wednesday with Great Lakes Community Action Partnership, a company that will perform the environmental study on the former SSG George J. Conaway U.S. Army Reserve Center property where the new jail is set to be constructed. “In order to get USDA funding and start the process to be able to look at that site for a potential jail, we need to have the environmental study done,” Coffland said.
