Rotary Hears Talk On Española Pathways Shelter
Los Alamos
“The work began even before the doors opened,” recalled Ralph Martinez, co-founder of Española Pathways Shelter (EPS), the first homeless shelter in Española.
During the Feb. 23 zoom meeting of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos, Martinez described how those doors opened permanently last month, but the urgency for this regional need was evident years before.
A native of Española and a 1996 graduate of Española High School, Martinez lost his home and his family just five years later when he spiraled into drug addiction. For six years he found shelter in vacant buildings, abandoned cars, and under a bridge in Española.

“It’s THE celebration of the year!” explained Rotarian Tony Chan, a native of Hong Kong, when he presented “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Chinese New Year” to the Rotary Club of Los Alamos during the Feb. 2 Zoom meeting.
Comparing its importance and magnitude to an American Thanksgiving, Chan described the Chinese New Year celebration, usually 16 days long, as a non-religious festival that generally falls in February although it sometimes appears on the calendar in January or March.
This year, Feb. 12 marks the beginning of the Year of the Ox, one of 12 zodiac signs upon which the years are based. Among the characteristics of those born under the sign of the Ox are strength, stubbornness, reliability, patience and fairness.

Los Alamos resident Charles “Chuck” Tallman will soon celebrate his 90th birthday but that isn’t his only major milestone. This year also marks his 50th year in the Rotary Club of Los Alamos.
Tallman is the local club’s longest serving member. He said he joined the club in 1971 but his first experience with Rotary was much earlier.
He explained he grew up in a poor area in Oklahoma City but one of the things in his neighborhood was a big park built by the local Rotary Club.
As an adult and living in Los Alamos, Tallman served as chair of the United Fund, which is now known as United Way. This caught the attention of the local Rotary Club and he was invited to join.
