Jamaica has slipped one place on the Global Press Freedom index, and now ranks seventh among 180 countries that most respect press freedom. Published annually by Reporters Without Borders, a non-governmental global media watchdog group based in Paris, the index evaluates the level of freedom available to the media throughout the world. Despite the slippage in the ranking for Jamaica for 2021, the media watchdog group noted that the Caribbean island generally enjoys widespread respect for freedom of information, and continues to rank among the safest countries in the world for journalists. Further, it stated that physical aggression was rare, pointing out that it has been over a decade since a serious act of violence was committed against a member of the press in Jamaica.
