Kenora Rotarians Update The Peace Park Project

Kenora, ON, Canada / 89.5 The Lake Jun 10, 2021 | 6:31 AM The Rotary Club of Kenora is now halfway towards their fundraising goal for their Rotary Peace Park in partnership with the City of Kenora and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Transgender, 2 Spirit+ Ontario Committee. Community members have raised nearly 55 thousand dollars so far and Kenora members spoke with the Rotary Club of Dryden at their virtual meeting Wednesday about the ongoing project. Kelly Williams explains the park is an effort towards reconciliation and combating racism against Indigenous people in Kenora. “It’s been coming more and more to the forefront and we just felt that this was a good time for us to show leadership within Kenora to do what we could to build peace. The City agreed and the committee decided that they wanted to join us and place on the two memorials that are going to be in Ontario at our Peace Park.”

The Cornerstone has donated $500, which has now been matched by the Plaza. “The donation will go towards the Kenora Rotary Peace Park in recognition, acknowledgment and grief, for these children and all that suffered through residential schools” said Cornerstone Owner Pam Viinikka. Viinikka and the Cornerstone staff wore orange yesterday in recognition, to commemorate youth affected by residential schools.

Article continues below advertisement ↴ The Rotary Club of Kenora is planning another restaurant fundraiser on Monday, May 31, 2021 at The Cornerstone.  A choice of six meal options for $20 each is being offered and in addition, dessert items for $9 each.  A portion of the proceeds raised by the restaurant will go toward the fundraising goal of the Kenora Rotary Peace Park, which has raised a little more than $30,000 of the $100,000 to complete the park. The park will be located on First Avenue South and is a partnership between Kenora Rotary, the City of Kenora and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, trans, 2 spirit plus Memorial committee and is scheduled to open October 4, 2021.
