A long stretch of salt marsh that hugs the East Coast from North Carolina to Florida is being targeted for conservation under a unique agreement reached by state and federal officials, including several Pentagon leaders concerned about climate change.
The goal in trying to protect more than 1 million acres of salt marsh is to maintain coastal resilience to climate change and protect inland property, including several major military bases that are jeopardized by rising sea levels and intensifying coastal storms. Salt marshes protect coastal and inland areas from flooding, storm surge and erosion, and have other benefits such as providing coastal habitat for birds and fish, which are vital to local economies.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Alabama is making is easier to hunt coyotes, which are considered a nuisance in some areas, and feral hogs, which are blamed for causing $50 million in property damage annually in the state.
A new law signed by Gov. Kay Ivey recently allows hunters who purchase a license to kill the animals at night, a move that wildlife officials hope will help control their populations. Currently, such hunts are allowed only by special permit.
Coyotes, which have become more common in the Southeast in recent years, are known to prey on farm animals at times and also kill white-tailed deer. Wild hogs can wipe out entire crops and reproduce quickly.

Alabamans will now be able to hunt coyotes and feral hogs at night.
Gov. Kay Ivey recently signed a new law that will allow the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to create an official season for hunting the two types of animals at night, according to an announcement.
Previously, hunting coyotes and feral hogs at night required a special permit, which was only issued to landowners or someone they specifically delegate to hunt the creatures. Now, hunters will be able to buy a $15 license instead of going through the process of getting a permit.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources estimates that feral swine cause $50 million in private property damage in the state every year. The department also said feral swine damage agriculture and wildlife habitats throughout the state and across the South.
