FEMA officials begin flood damage assessments in Lee County

BEATTYVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) â Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials arrived in Lee County on Wednesday morning to survey damage to homes and businesses caused by massive floodings in early March.
Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Feb. 28 following heavy rainfall that resulted in flash floods in several counties. The governor has announced he will be requesting two federal disaster declarations. One will be for damage the state saw during Februaryâs ice storms and one will be for flooding damage.
FEMA officials in Lee County on Wednesday conducted surveys for individual assistance to homeowners, according to Lee County Emergency Management Director Jon Allen.

Some Beattyville residents, business owners may never return

BEATTYVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) â It took some business owners in Beattyville years to open their establishments. It took fewer than 48 hours for those businesses to be destroyed.
Flooding from the nearby Kentucky and North Fork Kentucky rivers has turned the downtown area into something one can only access by boat. The flood water is being measured in feet, and the time to recover is not being measured in days or weeks.
âIn all my time here, 25 years, Iâve never seen water in this situation,â said Lee County Emergency Management Director Jon Allen. âWe do have some new businesses in town that are going to struggle to reopen.
