Deep seabed off Chiba becomes final dumpsite for plastic waste : The Asahi Shimbun

A surfeit of plastic waste is spotted on the seabed nearly 6,000 meters deep off the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. (Provided by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) Plastic waste has accumulated at a final destination nearly 6 kilometers deep on the seabed off the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, scientists have discovered. An average of 4,561 pieces of disposable and other plastic products were found per 1 square kilometer at three points in the area, according to a survey conducted by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). “The abyssal seafloor off the Boso Peninsula, where whirlpools are produced by the Kuroshio current, turned out to be an accumulation spot for plastic waste,” said Ryota Nakajima, a vice chief researcher at JAMSTEC.

Just before midnight on 9 August, Japanese Emperor Hirohito convened the Supreme War Council. After a long debate and a proposal by Prime Minister Suzuki, Japan eventually accepted the Potsdam Declaration. The Potsdam Declaration was an ultimatum issued by the United States, Great Britain, and China. Issued on 26 July 1945, the declaration called for the unconditional surrender of Japan. Japan surrendered on 15 August, which is now known as Victory over Japan Day. However, the surrender was not formally signed until 2 September.

The coverage of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death will be no different – and the images of him looking frail on his release from hospital last month will linger in the public imagination.
