Postal service providers in court fight over 1kg package deliveries Share Pretoria - The SA Post Office, PostNet and SA Express Parcel Association are set to square off in court later this year regarding the delivery of packages weighing 1kg and less. The Post Office said it was the only entity licensed in terms of the Postal Services Act to courier these packages. PostNet earlier rushed to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, where it secured an urgent order to put a ruling on hold which would have prohibited the franchise from further couriering any package weighing a kilogram or less.

Post Office action could stifle e-commerce in SA

May 11, 2021 The SA Post Office has launched court action against PostNet and the SA Express Parcel Association, aiming to make the Post Office the only operator that can deliver packages weighing 1kg and less. If the court rules in the Post Office’s favour, the impact on courier companies and e-commerce business would be immense. Given the operational difficulties that the Post Office has been facing, DPO SA MD Peter Harvey believes that placing limitations on who can handle smaller packages could have a very negative impact not only on the local logistics sector, but also on South Africa’s budding ecommerce sector.

Some Post Office branches reopen after deals struck with landlords

At least 27 branches of the South African Post Office have reopened around the country after being closed due to non-payment of rentals. The South African Post Office [Sapo] which services millions of citizens has been plagued by financial woes. This has resulted in about 55 branches being closed earlier this year due to rental arrears. In March, City Press reported that Sapo submitted to Parliament that its total debt to creditors – which includes service providers and landlords – totaled R1,8 billion at the end of September. It was further reported that over a period of seven years, Sapo received a total of R7 billion in government bailouts.

Misha Jordaan The SA Post Office (SAPO) - which is battling financial challenges which have been worsened by the lockdown - says it has reopened most branches that were temporarily closed. A number of post offices in seven provinces resumed operations on Monday, while talks were under way with the landlords of the remaining branches that were still not operational. Negotiations continue with landlords of the remaining few post offices that are closed; they will reopen as soon as agreement is reached with property owners,   according to the company. The state-owned service provider expects negotiations to be concluded within the next few weeks.
