SA’s poultry industry has been dealt another blow after the outbreak of avian flu on a second farm in Gauteng.
Industry body the SA Poultry Association (Sapa) said on Monday that the outbreak occurred on a broiler breeder farm on the East Rand of Johannesburg. The farm is under quarantine and the birds are being culled and disposed of under the supervision of the department of agriculture, land reform and rural development.

SA’s poultry industry is on edge after another outbreak of avian flu was reported on a farm in the North West, a discovery that is likely to prompt more neighbouring countries to ban the importation of local broilers and eggs.
Already three neighbouring countries Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique have suspended poultry imports from SA in a bid to contain the spread of the disease.

Avian flu outbreak in Gauteng, but no cases in Western Cape

Cape Town - The provincial Department of Agriculture is closely monitoring flocks of chicken in the Western Cape following the SA Poultry Associationâs (Sapa) confirmation of an outbreak of H5 avian influenza (AI) in Gauteng.
Department spokesperson Daniel Johnson said: âWe are aware of reports that there has been an outbreak of AI in Gauteng. No such cases have been reported in the Western Cape.
âOur veterinary services continue to monitor the situation in the Western Cape and will remain vigilant. The intention is to release a statement over the next day or two.â
