It’s been a year of collective trauma and pain, with more than 330,000 U.S. deaths from the coronavirus, and counting. But it wasn’t all bad. Some people did their best to stay strong through difficult, isolating moments, and many persevered to do good in their communities. Here are the stories of five people in the region who found hope in 2020. Falling into romance For Ernestine Williams, 2020 brought both loss and love. Her year was “crazy, like everyone else’s.”

Indian Valley Middle School again winner of B101 music contest

FRANCONIA — For the second year in a row, the Indian Valley Middle School Select Choir is the winner of radio station B101 s Christmas Choir Competition in the kindergarten through eighth grade category.  What made this year s win even more special, Superintendent Frank Gallagher told the Souderton Area School Board at its December 17 meeting, is the additional challenge of having to wear masks and remain socially distanced for the performance of We Need a Little Christmas. Choir Director Diane Ramage had to adjust her instructional strategy in order to accomplish this, Gallagher said. 100 Years Ago BOY ARRESTED FOR EXPLOSION IN SCHOOL — The discovery of a number of cartridges in the stove at the Oak Grove school, near Unionville, in Hatfield township, last week, and the explosion in the stove some three weeks ago which resulted in the serious injury of the teacher, Mrs. Abram Kulp, caused the State police, after an investigation, to arrest Albert Thiemich, aged 17, of Lansdale . The State police worked on the theory that the deed was perpetrated by someone who had a grudge against the teacher or pupils. It is stated that young Thiemich formerly attended the school, but was told that he must pay tuition when he moved into Hilltown.
