Texas Defies NCAA on Transgender Athlete Policy, Adds New Restrictions

15 Apr 2021 The Texas Senate approved legislation limiting transgender athletes to competing only in categories that correspond to their birth gender in contravention to the NCAA’s recent decision to allow transgender people to play in their choice of categories. The Texas bill focuses on “biological sex.” It maintains that athletes born as males will be banned from competing in girls’ sports, although girls would be permitted to play with biological boys if there is no comparable female sport. “This is about protecting female athletes and recognizing their accomplishments within their biological peer group,” said Sen. West Virginia governor plans to sign bill restricting transgender athletes

© Getty Images West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) on Wednesday confirmed his intention to sign a new bill that would prevent transgender middle and high school athletes from participating in team sports that match their gender identity.  During a briefing on the coronavirus pandemic, Justice commented on the bill approved by the Republican-dominated state legislature last week, saying that he would “let it become law or sign it,” and that he was “absolutely not” in support of vetoing the measure, one of several pieces of anti-transgender legislation advancing in GOP-led states. “From the standpoint of how I feel about it personally … I just can’t possibly get through my head that it is the right thing for us at a middle school level or a high school level in our state for me not to support the bill,” Justice explained. “So, I do support the bill.”

NCAA Says It Supports Transgender Athletes

By Vivian KaneApr 13th, 2021, 5:44 pm As more and more states pass anti-transgender legislation, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has released a statement saying the organization “firmly and unequivocally supports the opportunity for transgender student-athletes to compete in college sports.” The rights of trans people have been under extreme attack with more than 20 states introducing anti-trans bills this year alone, and young trans athletes have been at the center of this fight. The NCAA has been under pressure from LGBTQIA advocacy groups to step in and use its immense influence by refusing to hold championships in states that pass anti-trans laws. And while the org didn’t explicitly say that in their statement, the implication seems pretty clear.
