Nikki Fried’s long slog toward the Governor’s Mansion hit some potholes last week.
First, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that the
recreational marijuana initiative Fried strongly supported can’t go on the ballot, but it’s probably moot now. By a 5-2 vote, the justices ruled that the amendment’s wording was too vague.
Backers of the proposal already secured more than 62% of the nearly 900,000 petition signatures needed to put the proposal on the 2022 ballot.
We’ll have more on that issue several paragraphs down.

The daily rundown Between Saturday and Sunday, the number of Florida coronavirus cases increased by 6,834 (0.3 percent), to 2,168,901; active hospitalizations increased by 71 (nearly 2.2. percent), to 3,324; deaths of Florida residents rose by 35 (0.1 percent), to 34,439; 8,016,441 Floridians have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
Attorney Gwen Graham, a Democrat, ran unsuccessfully for Florida governor in 2018.
President Joe Biden announced Friday that he plans to nominate former Florida Congresswoman Gwen Graham to serve as an assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Education.
Graham, an attorney, represented the Tallahassee area and other parts of North Florida in the U.S. House from 2015 to 2017 and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018.
Friday’s announcement by the White House said Graham would serve as assistant secretary for legislation and congressional affairs at the Department of Education.
The announcement said Graham, whose father is former Gov. and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, was “known as one of the House s most bipartisan members” while she was in Congress.
