Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal cancelled for second straight year due to health crisis

MONTREAL The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The news was revealed at a new conference in Quebec City on the Grand Prix Wednesday morning that included federal Minister of Economic Development Melanie Joly, Quebec Minister of Tourism Pierre Fitzgibbon, Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante and Quebec Minister Responsible for the Montreal Region Caroline Proulx. The federal and provincial governments have reached an agreement to extend the F1 event in Montreal for two years to make up for the 2020 and 2021 cancelled races. Those races will take place in 2030 and 2031 with the partners committing $25 million and $26 million for those editions.

CEGEPs, universities could have 60 per cent of students learning in-person in fall: cabinet minister

MONTREAL While schools won t return to normal before 2022, Quebec Minister for Higher Education Danielle McCann said there may be more students on CEGEP and university campuses in September. McCann said she wanted the return of “as many as possible” students in the fall semester, though those that do return will need to wear masks. Physical distancing will be reduced to one meter instead of the current metre-and-a-half. McCann said those steps will allow campuses to increase their capacity, estimated that the fall could see schools at “close to 60 per cent” of their normal capacity. The minister said she was aware of the great difficulties students faced over the past year, as students turned to online learning and were deprived of “camaraderie” during a pivotal part of their development.

Quebec seniors minister announces a shift in care and services for elderly

MONTREAL Quebec Minister for Seniors Marguerite Blais tabled a policy on housing and care for seniors on Thursday and said it will be a shift in the way care and services are delivered. During a news conference, the minister responsible for seniors explained that under this policy, priority will be given to home care and, when this is no longer possible, to accommodation, but in smaller settings than before. She noted that $10 million will be spent to hire project managers to develop this policy in all regions of Quebec. The dynamic will change, she said, because it must be recognized that residential and long-term care centres are not only places to live but also places to care, since a significant portion of the clientele has major neurocognitive problems.
