The Bench said the election process in other Municipalities should continue as per the schedule announced by State Election Commission The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court on March 1 set aside a notification issued by the State government’s Directorate of Municipal Administration reserving various wards in five out of 11 civic bodies where elections will be held later this month.
The court ordered the Goa government to reconduct the exercise of reservation of wards in the five Municipal Councils of Margao, Mormugao, Mapusa, Sanguem and Quepem.
The Bench said the election process in other Municipalities should continue as per the schedule announced by State Election Commission (SEC).

Panaji, March 1 : Billed as a crucial round of local body polls ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections in Goa, the Bombay High Court bench in the coastal state on Monday picked fist-sized holes in the Goa government s reservation procedure, with the court order exposing glaring instances of illegalities and violation of the constitutionally mandated provisions for reservation.
The HC also passed severe strictures against the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA), a state government agency responsible for carving out reservations for women, OBC, ST and SC communities in constituencies of five municipalities, polls for which have now been postponed pending fresh rounds of reservations as directed in the HC order.

42 new COVID cases detected in state
Panaji: Goa, on Sunday, witnessed 42 new COVID-19 cases, and a death linked to the deadly virus, taking the number of active COVID-19 cases to 546.
Around 79 patients recovered from the deadly virus during the last 24-hours. The confirmed cases of deadly virus in the state now stand at 54,235, of which 52,910 patients have defeated the deadly disease.
According to the health bulletin, till date 779 patients have died of the dreaded Corona virus disease in the state.
As per the Directorate of Health Services, active positive cases in the jurisdiction of urban health centres stand as follows: Margao – 59 cases, Vasco – 15 cases, Panaji – 40 cases and Mapusa- 20 cases.

Goa has entered a period of planning pre-2022 assembly election strategies so not much can be expected from the government which would continue to buy time over all controversial issues, till elections for the eighth state assembly get declared. Today nobody hears anything about the most important demand made by ex MLA late Matanhy Saldanha for getting a âspecial statusâ for Goa. He was supported till March 2012 by ex CM Manohar Parrikar but he lost interest to pursue it after Saldanhaâs untimely death. Since then, we are watching a scenario which shows how Goa is rapidly losing everything it was always known for.
