LARNED – A man committed to Larned State Hospital as a sexually violent predator escaped by walking away from the facility Wednesday morning.
Officials said the resident, John Freeman Colt, 42, was captured on camera walking out of the Dillon Building on the hospital campus at about 7 a.m. He was last seen after 11 a.m. in Larned and is classified as “absent without permission.”
Colt initially was convicted in 2001 under a plea agreement on counts of aggravated sexual battery and aggravated burglary for attempting to rape his 19-year-old Topeka neighbor.
The state hospital video shows he had shaved his beard and changed his hair and used a fraudulent identity badge to get through the security checkpoint, according to a release from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability, which oversees the program.
