Subscriber only The Gympie arts community is calling on the council to give it some certainty as to the future of its River Rd base, saying it is at risk of having to give back more than $40,000 in funding without it. Creative Arts Gympie Region has been calling the former Quartz Hub building on River Rd, opposite Memorial Park, home since the middle of last year after the two groups merged. Secretary Lesa Campbell said the plan was to turn the building into an arts hub, home to everything from live music to performance. But in November last year they were told by the council their management agreement was not being renewed and they had to leave in December.

As International Women’s Day gets closer, I look back with a small smile of satisfaction when I see how far we have come. But then, with a little trepidation, I look ahead and see how far we still have to go.

Just recently, I signed up for a nine month course through LGAQ called “Women Leading in Local Government” so if you were wondering how we of the fairer sex are going in local politics, this pretty much says it all. But at least my welcoming letter was signed by a bloke called Gary.
Ensuring Gympie Regional Council tender and procurement processes are about fairness and honesty - not jobs for mates - are among the focuses of the council as it closes in on its first year in office. Mayor Glen Hartwig and council CEO Shane Gray addressed a full house at the first Gympie Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting for 2021 last week, outlining the state of the region and the council s top priorities moving forward. Mr Hartwig listed roads as a major focus, saying good roads would further stimulate the local economy, especially in light of the fact that agriculture, timber and fishing account for more than a quarter of the region s businesses and are its second biggest export after manufacturing.
