Mayor lambasts cross-border plan

By Raquel Mustillo WATTLE Range mayor Des Noll has lambasted an interstate campaign focussed on upgrading the Green Triangle region’s key freight routes as “Victorian-centric” and warned unless a change of direction occurs it should be “scrapped”. Mr Noll took aim at the Green Triangle Region Freight Action Plan, an initiative involving South Australian and Victorian border councils, the timber and freight industries and the Port of Portland. Among the key actions of the plan is targeting State and Federal Government funding for road improvements to address emerging capacity constraints for transport associated with the forest and freight industries.

Nelson community to be heard

FEEDBACK WANTED: Glenelg Shire Council will host a Listening Post session in Nelson this month. BORDER closures, tourism restrictions and other issues impacting the Nelson community will be on the table for discussion at a Glenelg Shire Council public meeting this month. Council’s Listening Post initiative will be held at Nelson Hotel on Thursday, March 25 with residents invited to talk to their council representatives about matters impacting the community. Glenelg Shire Mayor Anita Rank said elected members were keen to hear from Nelson residents, particularly following the impact of COVID-19. “The past 12 months have been incredibly challenging, particularly for our cross-border communities, so a Listening Post in Nelson will be a great way to discuss the impacts of border closures, tourism restrictions and more,” she said.

Glenelg Shire Council hosted the meeting, the first of the year for the Great South Coast alliance of Councils. Chair of the Great South Coast Group Anita Rank said the meeting allowed delegates to develop a greater understanding of Portland’s role in the Great South Coast. “It’s been fantastic to host our local leaders in Portland today to discuss what lies ahead for the region and what issues and opportunities the Great South Coast Group will be prioritising and pursuing through 2021 and beyond,” Cr Rank said.

Signed today at Portland Maritime Discovery Centre by Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin and Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) identifies several key areas of co-operation. Professor Martin said the agreement provides a framework for greater collaboration that delivers real benefits for the local community, economy and environment.
