Leah Carlene Knowlton

Leah Carlene Knowlton, 28, of Central City, Colo., was an amazing and talented woman who was taken from us by violent hands on Jan. 20, 2021; her family and friends are devastated. Born Feb. 8, 1992, in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of Joanne B. “Jody” (Yeager) Knowlton of Rapidan, Va., and the late John Wellington Knowlton. She was a 2010 graduate of Fairfield High School and earned an associate degree from Craven Community College in general sciences. Leah loved to run and participated in many races over the years, but was most proud of her Norwegian Hiking Badge that challenged her more than anything before, especially considering her rebuilt knee.

Creating and Sustaining Equity of New Bern seeks systemic racism answers

Sun Journal Systemic racism is one of a myriad of issues an emerging social justice group plans to tackle in New Bern and Eastern North Carolina. Creating and Sustaining Equity of New Bern – CASE – is the result of summer discussions by Craven Community College sociology teacher Caitlin Trombley, her husband Robert and five young professional women in town - Kelly Rogers, Bailey Evans, Niki Potter, JoAnna Wishon, and Heather Guthrie. The conversations evolved into the decision to create a nonprofit action group and get real answers. “Our mission is to eliminate inequality and build a more equitable community by providing education, training, assistance and supportive resources to the area,” said Trombley, who along with her husband, are New Bern natives.

New Bern s Veterans Stand-down has been cancelled

Sun Journal New Bern’s annual Veterans Stand-down, which assists disabled, disadvantaged and homeless veterans, has become yet another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Normally held in February, organizers cited ongoing CDC crowd limit and safety requirements in their decision to cancel this year’s event, which began in 2014 and was held most recently at the West New Bern Recreation Center.  Sponsored by the NC Veterans Employment Base Camp and Organic Garden (VEBCOG) along with NCWorks Career Center and Cherry Point Baptist Church, the event serves homeless and disadvantaged veterans as well as family members of veterans and active duty personnel.

52 Faces of Community: Bonita Simmons

52 Faces of Community: Bonita Simmons By Holly Desrosier Bonita Simmons is no stranger to the spotlight. She has been performing as an independent gospel artist since her childhood and has given performances on several prestigious stages. However, she has also used her platform as an outreach ministry to help others in need, namely incarcerated women who are looking to turn their lives around. Bonita was born in Stamford, Connecticut, but was raised in Kinston. Her parents were from the area and wanted to raise her in the south, so they moved back down when she was about 3. Her father was a preacher, so she began singing in church at a young age and performed for a variety of community events while growing up.
