Steps on how they made 5,6,7,8 – We spent years trying not to perform it!

Last modified on Mon 1 Feb 2021 11.36 EST Claire Richards, vocals When I auditioned for Steps, we had to dance to a demo of 5,6,7,8. I remember thinking: “Thank God it’s a line dance.” I wasn’t a trained dancer and learning a proper routine would have probably scuppered my chances. But, after the management told me I’d made it, they said: “That’s going to be the first single.” I was like: “Oh no!” Line-dancing was something your mum did. I was 19 and wanted to go clubbing. Next we auditioned for Pete Waterman and the Jive label. They signed us on the basis of one mimed performance – we just put on that demo of 5,6,7,8 and didn’t even pretend to have microphones. But Pete saw something in us. I remember him saying: “Hold on tight, this rocket is about to take off.”

Awards Chatter Podcast — Paul Greengrass

Born in a suburb of London and raised mostly by his mother while his father was away as a Merchant Marine, Greengrass was a kid who found it difficult to fit in, who was a bit averse to institutions and a bit averse to polite society until, that is, he lost myself in the arts. He got his act together enough to attend and graduate from Cambridge, after which he landed a job working at Granada Television s World in Action, an investigative news show deeply rooted in the British documentary movement for which he spent nine years 1978 through 1987 traveling the world writing, shooting and editing segments. That was really my education, he says.

Paul Greengrass: Storytelling is under attack

6 min read The director on the benefits of streaming and his new Tom Hanks western, News of the World Paul Greengrass has heard all the shaky camera jokes before. The director’s kinetic, naturalistic style of film-making – which enlivened and defined the Jason Bourne franchise – was forged by the director’s “ripped-from-the-headlines” subjects. He learned his craft working on Granada Television’s investigative current-affairs series World in Action during the 1980s. Resurrected, his 1989 debut feature, concerned the court-martial of an MIA soldier (David Thewlis) in the Falklands. Other notable early projects included The Fix (1997), a drama concerning the British football betting scandal of 1964; and The Murder of Stephen Lawrence (1999), an account of the youngster’s death and the inadequate subsequent investigation by the London Metropolitan Police.
