Racism, Land & The American Farming Landscape Presenters: Lydia Clemmons, President of Clemmons Family Farm, VT Jarrad Nwameme, Moderator: Meghan Howey, Professor in Anthropology, University of New Hampshire  In 1920, there were 949,889 Black farmers. A century later, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, only 35,470 remained. This panel will investigate the contributing factors to this enormous land loss including discriminatory practices, such as the denial of USDA loans. and slow handling of civil rights complaints. Presenters will also share the innovative ways Black New England Farmers are reclaiming the land and sowing the seeds of health and empowerment. I’ve collected my favorite 15 books of the year here (technically, two were published in 2019, but I didn’t get around to reading them until this year).
