Another new entry in the Grimaldi fleet. This time it is the Eco Livorno, the third of twelve hybrid vessels of the innovative Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) class, delivered today by the Chinese Jinling shipyard located in Nanjing. Thanks to their unique design, the GG5G-class units are not only the largest short sea ro-ro vessels in the world, but also the most eco-friendly ones.
The Eco Livorno, which flies the Italian flag, has a length of 238 meters, a beam of 34 meters, a gross tonnage of 67,311 tonnes and a service speed of 20.8 knots. The loading capacity of her seven decks – two of which are hoistable – is twice that of the previous class of short sea ro-ro ships deployed by the Grimaldi Group: in fact, the vessel can carry 7,800 linear meters of freight, equivalent to around 500 trailers and 180 cars. The quarter stern ramp allows the loading of freight units weighing up to 150 tons.
Grimaldi Green 5th Generation-class (GG5G-class) vessels are new hybrid roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships being built by Nanjing Jinling Shipyard for Grimaldi Group for use in short-sea shipping.
The GG5G-class will include 12 hybrid Ro-Ro vessels, of which nine will be operated in the Mediterranean Sea and the remaining three will be deployed in Northern Europe by Grimaldi Group’s subsidiary Finnlines.
The vessels are expected to increase operational efficiency by 100% in terms of consumption / tonne of freight transported.
GG5G-class construction
Grimaldi Group placed a $400m order for the construction of six Ro-Ro vessels in May 2018. The order is part of the company’s plan to expand and modernise its existing fleet of vessels.

Grimaldi Euromed, a subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group specializing in the maritime transport of passengers and RORO cargo, has won a €35 million ($42.5 million) loan facility from CaixaBank S.A. The loan is intended to finance the acquisition of a new Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel Eco Barcelona.
The ship is under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd. and joins Grimaldi’s fleet of over 130 ships operating on Italian domestic and international routes.

th Generation (GG5G) class and can transport over 7,800 million of rolling goods, equivalent to circa 500 trailers.
WFW advises CaixaBank on €35m Grimaldi Euromed financing
Watson Farley & Williams (“WFW”) has advised CaixaBank S.A. (“CaixaBank”) on a €35m loan facility to Grimaldi Euromed S.p.A. (“Grimaldi Euromed”) to finance the acquisition of a new Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel.
