Royal HaskoningDHV has been awarded a contract for environmental consultancy services for NortH2, a large offshore wind-to-hydrogen project being developed by a consortium comprising Shell, Gasunie, Equinor, and RWE, and supported by Groningen Seaports and Province of Groningen.

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the as its technical integration and optimisation contractor for the NortH2 project, a global flagship project for large scale green hydrogen production. The consultancy will develop conceptual designs that will be carried forward to a final investment decision.
NortH2 wants to play a major role in achieving the European, Dutch and German climate goals and accelerating the development of an international hydrogen market. The project aims to achieve this through large-scale production, storage and transport of green hydrogen to industrial sectors that are difficult or unable to electrify. New offshore wind farms would generate the green power and could gradually grow in capacity from 1 GW in 2027, to 4 GW by 2030, to more than 10 GW in 2040. Vopak Solar Park Eemshaven is starting construction of its solar park located in Eemshaven in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands. The new solar park will have a capacity of approximately 25 MW, which equates to an average consumption of approximately 8000 Dutch households. The subsidy and permit processes as well as the financing have been successfully completed.
The solar park will be built on 19 ha. of land around the Vopak Terminal Eemshaven and construction on the site will start in 1Q2021. According to the current planning, the first green power will be supplied to the electricity grid in 3Q2021.
Vopak Solar Park Eemshaven is a joint venture with the parties Groningen Seaports, Vopak and funds managed by Whitehelm Capital. The first plans for this solar park were announced in February 2019.

2020 was a year of radical shifts in energy markets. The first, but not the most important one, was the deliberate failure of the OPEC+ deal in March.
